Car insurance is a contract between you and an insurance company that protects you against financial loss in the event of an accident or theft. It provides coverage for property damage, liability, and medical expenses.
In India, having at least a third-party car insurance policy is mandatory as per the Motor Vehicles Act. However, for comprehensive protection of your vehicle, a comprehensive car insurance policy is recommended.

Third-party insurance is the minimum legal requirement and covers damages caused by your vehicle to someone else's property or person. It does not cover damages to your own vehicle. Comprehensive insurance, on the other hand, covers both third-party liabilities and damages to your own vehicle due to accidents, theft, fire, natural calamities, etc.
No Claim Bonus (NCB) is a discount offered on your premium when you don't make any claims during a policy year. The NCB starts at 20% after the first claim-free year and can go up to 50% after five consecutive claim-free years. This bonus is transferable if you switch to a different insurance provider or change your vehicle.
Zero depreciation cover, also known as bumper-to-bumper cover, is an add-on that ensures you get full claim amount without any deduction for depreciation on the value of parts replaced. In a standard comprehensive policy, the insurance company deducts a certain percentage of the claim amount as depreciation based on the age of the parts being replaced.
To file a car insurance claim, follow these steps: 1) Inform your insurance company immediately about the incident, 2) File an FIR in case of theft or third-party involvement, 3) Fill out the claim form provided by the insurer, 4) Submit necessary documents like policy papers, RC copy, driving license, and FIR copy (if applicable), 5) The insurer will assign a surveyor to assess the damage, and 6) After approval, the claim will be settled either through cashless service at network garages or reimbursement.
Several factors determine your car insurance premium, including: 1) The make, model, and age of your car, 2) The Insured Declared Value (IDV) of your vehicle, 3) Your age and driving experience, 4) Your claims history and No Claim Bonus, 5) The geographical zone where your car is registered (metro cities usually have higher premiums), 6) Add-on covers chosen, and 7) Type of fuel used by the car (diesel cars typically have higher premiums than petrol cars).
